Future of Innovation and Jobs
Future of Innovation and Jobs
According to a study from Washington University, 40 percent of companies on the S&P 500 will no longer exist in 10 years. Ernst & Young indicates that there is a high probability that 45% of companies in any given industry can become obsolete and vanish.
Do you know what is the greatest challenge in companies and governments around the world? Allowing this fear of being disrupted to immobilize them. Instead of being proactive, they resist. They think that by resisting, they are saving their jobs but in fact they are sealing their fate. Collectively this mindset of resistance to change leads to companies dying.
Just look at the history of Fortune 500. 88% of companies from the 1955 list are no longer on the Fortune 500 list. Most blue chip companies only stay at the top for 10 years then new companies take their place.
I am writing a book called Strive. It’s a book about how doing the things MOST uncomfortable leads to success. This concept doesn’t just apply to individuals and corporations but also to governments.
I am originally from South Korea. Did you know that we were a colony of Japan for 35 years? Those were tough times as a nation. And our prospect as a country didn’t get much better after the Japanese rule and World World II because we went into a civil war. The Korean War further decimated our country from 1950 to 1953. When the armistice was signed on July 27, 1953, we were not even one whole country but only ½ of a peninsula. We were one of the poorest countries in the world. In 1960, our GDP per capita was $79; that’s lower than most African countries.
In 2015, South Korea’s GDP per capita was $36,612. It ranks in the OECD and the G-20. And South Korea is also one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world.
So how did this happen?
INTENTIONALITY. Doing the things that’s most uncomfortable to transform a nation. It started with building new industries from scratch. And instituting higher education as the most important factor in building a human capital economy. It was a lot of sweat and hard work. There were no shortcuts. To go from one of the poorest nations to a top 10 OECD nation in less than 40 years was no easy matter. Everything about it was uncomfortable…
